Why We Exist

We strengthen government school classrooms with learning innovations and guide every student to chart their own career pathway to a productive future.

India Literacy Project (ILP) is a nonprofit organization founded in 1990, working across 10 states in India. ILP partners with local NGOs, government education departments, and corporate foundations to strengthen government schools from within – designing learning interventions, training teachers, and building community ownership around education. Through a three-stage approach – Schooling, Learning, and Earning – we achieve the outcomes listed below.

Outcomes

Active Community governance

SMCs and communities sustain school quality and support children’s education independently

Empowered teachers

Teachers independently use multiple teaching methods, creating student-centered, engaged classrooms

Improved learning outcomes

Students achieve grade-level competency in foundational skills, science, and digital literacy

Informed Career transitions

Students make purposeful post-school choices based on self-awareness, skills, and knowledge of options

Our Focus

India Literacy Project (ILP) supports one continuous journey – from a child’s earliest years, through foundational reading and numeracy, into science, digital and critical-thinking skills, and onward to career pathways – all inside government schools. We organize this work across three stages: Schooling, Learning, and Earning.
