Our approach to Schooling

Over the last two decades, India has made significant progress in education. Enrollment in primary schools has risen to nearly 96%, and infrastructure has improved. Yet, many children from vulnerable and marginalized communities are still left behind. They face barriers like lack of access, poverty, child labor, or early marriage — all of which prevent them from receiving a quality education.

At India Literacy Project (ILP), we define “Schooling” as more than just enrollment. For us, it means ensuring every child not only gets to school but stays in school, learns well, and transitions smoothly to higher classes. We work primarily in remote, rural, and disadvantaged communities, building strong ecosystems around government schools so that children can thrive.

Preparing for the future

How we strengthen schooling

Expanding access & keeping children in school

We collaborate with governments to start new schools where they are most needed.

Enrollment drives, door-to-door visits, and community campaigns help bring children — especially girls — into classrooms.

Street plays and awareness programs highlight the importance of education.

Through School Monitoring Committees (SMCs), we also fight against child marriage and child labor.

Improving school's infrastructure

We work with local authorities to ensure essentials: functional toilets, safe drinking water, and healthy mid-day meals.

Our target: 90%+ preschools with clean toilets and water and 95%+ schools serving nutritious meals.

We support digital learning by providing laptops, projectors, and speakers, creating Smart Classrooms that blend traditional teaching with interactive content.

Building community ownership

We train Mothers’ Committees and SMCs to actively monitor schools and plan for their development.

Children form Child Rights Clubs and Child Parliaments to champion education among peers.

Parents and self-help groups contribute by making teaching/play materials and supporting school upkeep.

This collective ownership has helped communities secure new preschools and schools where none existed before.

Supporting teachers and pre-school workers

To address teacher shortages, ILP provides para-teachers while pushing for permanent hires through SMCs.

We also support preschool workers with training and resources to nurture early learning.

Our goal is 90% attendance and high transition rates in every school we serve.

ILP's "Model Schools Initiative" aims to transform 205 schools across 5 districts in Karnataka, reaching approximately 55,000 students, by improving conceptual learning and 21st-century skills.

The bigger goal

All these efforts come together to ensure that children in government schools gain grade-level skills, complete their education, and are prepared for productive careers. For ILP, schooling is not just about getting children into classrooms — it’s about creating opportunities for a lifetime.
